Halophyte Research on Al Sammaliah Island
Halophytes are plants that can occur over a wide range of salinities. Halophytes can tolerate high salinity concentrations in both water and soil. On Al Sammaliah Island, halophytes occur both in the coastal zone and in the interior of the Island. CER is currently investigating ways to increase the productivity of halophytes growing on Al Sammaliah Island, including the use of brackish waters, and recycling sewage water. The most dominant halophytic plants recorded on the Island are: Avicennia marina, Arthrocnemum glaucum, Halopeplis perfoliata, Anabasis setifera. There are also some associate halophytes that occur at lower coverage such as: Seidlitzia setifera, Cyperus conglomeratus, Limonium axillare, Suaeda vermiculata, Heliotropium bacciferum, Salsola tetrandra, Zygophyllum simplex and Cornulaca monacantha. |
