Commission of Environmental Research

cer_logo.gif (6155 bytes)CER is one of the Commissions of the Emirates Heritage Club established under the instructions of H.H. Sheikh Sultan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Emirates Heritage Club, on August 26, 1996.   CER collaborates internationally and was registered as an official international research organisation by Environment Australia in September 1998.

Mission Statement

The Commission of Environmental Research, Emirates Heritage Club is dedicated to the protection of the environment; and attempts to demonstrate the benefits of conservation and sustainable development to the UAE people through applied research and environmental awareness programs.

Goal

The Commission of Environmental Research, Emirates Heritage Club aims to foster an environmental awareness in the people of the UAE, that will assist in the long-term protection of the environment.

CER is based on Al Sammaliah island   which is located in the Arabian Gulf about 12 Kms Northeast of Abu Dhabi City.   The aim of the research team on Al Sammaliah island is to undertake studies on the environment of the island and to protect and develop its natural resources.

CER is involved with all aspects of the development and management of Al Sammaliah island.  CER's aim is also to develop the economic benefits of the natural resources without jeopardising the environmental balance of the island.  Al Sammaliah island is a natural reserve of around 35 square Kms characterised by coastal biodiversity which has been enriched by the planting of approximately 17 Km2 of mangroves, as well as other plant species.

Under the instructions of H.H. Sheikh Sultan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Al Sammaliah island hosts a variety of sports activities including horse and camel riding, falconry, shooting, and aquatic sports.
