CER have established honeybee hives on Al Sammaliah Island to produce honey from the large variety of native and exotic plants growing on the Island. The honeybees originate from Australia and Egypt, and are now self producing on the Island.

The objectives of the apiary project are;

To demonstrate the techniques and economic benefits of honey production to local people
To investigate the nectar quality for honey production, from local plants
To produce commercial quantities of honey

CER has established extensive areas of flowering vegetation either endemic to Arabia, or from other desert regions around the world such as Australia, North Africa and Pakistan. These plants provide varied and rich nectar that results in the production of a unique “Sammaliah Island” honey.

CER are currently investigating producing honey from the local mangrove (Avicennia marina) which grows in abundance around Al Sammaliah Island. The apiary project is organised and undertaken by CER staff.
